Biography
Private Practice of Law, 1974 to present
Hastings City Attorney, 1980 to 2000
Environmental Counsel for City of Hastings, 2000 to present.
After graduating from the Creighton University School of Law, Mike moved with his wife, Trish, to Hastings, Nebraska, to begin his professional career with Trish's father, Joseph R. Helmann. In Mike's early years as an attorney, he gained significant litigation experience at the trial level and in the appellate courts. After Mr. Helmann's death in 1992, Mike's practice gradually evolved from trial practice to a practice that now consists primarily of estate planning, probate, trust administration, real estate transactions (agricultural, commercial, and residential), formation and representation of corporations and limited liability companies, and environmental law, including representation of the City of Hastings since the mid-1980's through the present time in connection with the Hastings Groundwater Contamination Site, which is on U.S. EPA's National Priorities List. Other environmental experience includes representation of clients in central Nebraska pertaining to hazardous wastes, lead, petroleum, and other types of contamination, as well as representation of clients acquiring, selling, or leasing environmentally impaired parcels of real estate.
Mike has spoken at Nebraska State Bar Association seminars on the topics of estate planning and environmental law.
