Environmental Counsel for City of Hastings, 2000 to present.

While attending law school, Mike clerked for the Douglas County Attorney in Omaha, Nebraska.  After graduating from the Creighton University School of Law, Mike moved to Hastings, Nebraska, to begin his professional career with Joseph R. Helmann.  In Mike's early years as an attorney, he gained significant litigation experience at the trial level and in the appellate courts.  After Mr. Helmann's death in 1992, Mike's practice began to evolve from trial practice to a practice that included estate planning, corporate representation and environmental law, although he continues to litigate cases in his areas of practice.

Mike's environmental law experience includes representation of the City of Hastings since the mid-1980's in connection with the Hastings Groundwater Contamination Site, which is on U.S. EPA’s National Priorities List.  The contamination at the complex Hastings site arises out of multiple activities, including manufacturing, grain handling and storage, manufactured gas (MGP), operation of municipal landfills, and manufacture of munitions by the Federal Government.  This representation has included negotiation and litigation of issues at the Hastings Groundwater Contamination Site with and against private parties, U.S. EPA, the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality, the U.S. Navy, and the Army Corps of Engineers.  Other environmental experience includes representation of private clients in central Nebraska pertaining to lead, petroleum, and other types of contamination, as well as representation of numerous public and private clients acquiring, selling or leasing environmentally impaired parcels of real estate.

Mike has spoken at Nebraska State Bar Association seminars on the topics of estate planning and environmental law.
